Smile Series 3 speedo for series 2a and Garages.

    Hi.
    I have just Bought a series 2a SWB 1966.
I need to replace the speedo, will a Series 3 (LWB ex military) work?
    is it plug and Play?

Also I am new to the 2a. I live in Brisbane - and I am URGENTLY!! looking for a good 2a Mechanic - or service shop...and spares too.
Please let me know on both of the above - I would like to get it on a christmas outing!

    Thanks.
    William.

    Hi William
    Welcome aboard.
Basically it should, but part way thru the series 3 they changed over to a clip on drive.
Also check the numbers around the circumfrence of the gauge. They indicate what wheelsize/diff ratio they suit.
Some great info on "Mustang Sallys Landrover Pages" on which numbers suit which models.
Google it in Aust and you should get it up.Huge amounts of info for Series Landy owners!!!!

Yes the gauge will work no it wont just plug and play, theres a couple of different drive cables to worry about, fortunately these are interchangeable. from memory they also mount a little differently and have different lights (oil/choke/alt warn/hi beam) in them.

Im going to tip that the speedo itself is not at fault but the speedo drive cable is, they normally fracture off at the ends. reasonabley easy to change. (DIY if your not scared of screwdrivers and pay enough attention to detail when putting the spahgetti back in.)

If its for roadworthy, you can in some instances get away with mounting a GPS.

Cant help you short term, but once Im posted up there your welcom to swing it by my place.

    fast reply

    That was bloody quick.
Makes me feel a bit safer in my 2a endeavour.
The speedo is actually "broke" from the glass in. I have a LWB whic I can pull one out of.

There are actually about a dozen different speedos fitted to Series 2, 2a and 3, but they are all more or less interchangeable. Key differences are as follows.

    1. Series 1,2,2a have a different cable connection to S3 at the speedo end - other end is the same so you just have to fit a S3 cable if fitting a S3 speedo to a S2a. If there is a trip ion the S3 speedo you may have a problem arranging the adjuster for it - the cable is longer and not interchangeable.

    2. lwb and swb speedos are set for different tyre sizes - lwb is fine on an 88 if you have 7.50 tyres, which you most likely do anyway.

    3. When they changed to negative earth in about 1967 (same time as ignition/start switch) the warning lights went into the speedo - no problem putting a later speedo in an earlier model unless you are a stickler for perfection, but a problem going the other way (but not with the speedo itself).

    4. Stage 1 speedo is unsuitable for any other Series Land Rover as the diff ratio was different.

    5. Other differences are :- sixes had a different maximum speed, metric or miles, trip or no trip, and probably a few other differences I can't think of, but none of them are likely to be a problem.

If the problem is only the glass, these speedos can be easily disassembled - the bezel rotates about a tenth of a turn and lifts off.

My S2a is happily travelling round with a late S3 metric speedo, so I have been there!

You may need to have it recalibrated, depending what size tyre you have on the SWB compared with the S3 ex-Mil which more than likely have 7.50 x 16's
    I swapped & I did.
The '66 SWB 2A speedo is marked 1504 which I believe to be revolutions of the road wheel per mile.

William - the best (and cheapest) place in Brisbane to get LR parts is FWD on fairfield rd at yeerongpilly (sp?). One of the old aircraft hangers on the LHS just before you go over the bridge (when heading north). They are a wholesaler (supply most of the LR places in OZ with (series/county/RRC) parts - even dealers), but they also sell retail - usually at pretty good prices. With series LR's just beware that for some items, genuine parts are no longeer available, and some of the non-genuine equivalents can be poor quality at times.

    RoadWorthy Question

    Thanks for the above info.

    Ok:
Having bought this vehicle I will be needing to get a little work done for a raodworthy - time I don't have. Once this is done (the bare minimum for rego) I can crack out my Impreial toolset and start myself.

So I guess the question is: Where can I take it to get this done?
The vehicle is in Burliegh and I am in Brisbane. Redcliffe is a little too far in the opposite direction.

It's more just to get the process going - a work in progress it will very much be.
