    Fitting, wiring old spotties

I've got a pair of old spots off the 2 door rangie that I'm thinking of putting on the D2.
They have about 3 inches of cut wiring coming out the back, that's it.
    I think they're Cibie.

    My questions are:
How do you "test" them to make sure they work? (the bulbs and casing etc look ok)
What is the best way to rewire them, and fit and wire them up?
Is it possible to use the spare factory switches on the dash around the speedo as the switch?

Testing - connect the two bits of cut wiring - for the test doesn't matter which way round - connect one to the Neg - terminal on your battery, the other to the Poss +
Or if the wires are a bit short connect one to the Poss + and find a nice clean earth nearby.

Wiring them up - I would recommend you use a relay. I can do a basic wiring diagram if you want one.

As to how/where to fit them physically - not an idea

That will tell you if the work

Just about to do the same thing there, FE.

    I'll put up some pics.

You can get a pile of crimpable connectors to lengthen wire.

testing old lights is easy: The leg which mounts to whatever is (if a Cibie) is the earth, so attach it to an earth somewhere; then just apply the pos wire to the pos battery terminal - if you're worried about your car electrics - disconnect the neg bat wire first, before trying this.

its only 12v dc and for testing, a piece of cake.

the hardest part of this job is working how and where to mount the lights.

Sorry but that diagram - as is would not work.

Terminal 87a is a normally closed (n/c) contact so the bottom lamp on the diagram would be on when the switch is off.

You may be confusing the other type of relay, where there are two 87 poles - not a 87 and an 87a.

As you can see from the web site there are several relays - the one you would need to use has the two 87 poles - normally open contacts

Not the 87 and 87a changeover contacts.

You are of course correct. I did the diagram up quiet some time back and had forgotten to correct it.

I wired up my Disco 1 's driving spots using a spare push-on/push-off [new or 2nd/hand] Original FOG LAMP Switch and removed the orange warning lite in switch fitted a blue sleeve over a clear mini lamp......just make sure you orient switch correct way around so that the lamp that lights up switch function can shine through aperature correctly.......now its a factory looking installation which is lit for function at night and lights up blue when on.

The switch is wired into the relay to ground circuit i.e. the switch opens/closes the relays connection to earth thus acting as a control on whether the relay works or not to supply power to spots in usual fashion.
