The easiest place to find it is on the identification plate which is on the inside (not the engine bay) of the bulkhead in front of the main gearlever and below the instrument panel, near the starter button. Even if faded or painted over you should be able to see the stamped number. In the event that this plate is missing, or to confirm it is original, the number is stamped on the chassis. The position of this I think varied, but I believe that on the 86 it should be on the outside of the LH rear Spring hanger. If not there possibly somewhere on the front couple of feet of the right hand chassis member. The number on the chassis may be completely obscured by multiple layers of paint and/or rust, and need thorough wire brushing to find, and it is possible that the bit of chassis with it on has been replaced.

    THanks boys.

CHassis is sitting on stnads at moment on it's own - nothing attached to it - no bulkhead, etc..

I bought this chassis- fully refurbished a few months ago....

I will search for the rear hanger bracket now...

PS - Is it possible to somehow make the front guards of the 88" fit onto the 86" chassis?

88 guards will not fit 86 - the extra two inches is in front of the bulkhead.

I suggest you download the S1 workshop manual, as I think it has chassis numbers listed. Try www.landrover.ee

I got it in English - but don't worry, I checked, that site does not have the workshop manual, only the owners manual - sorry for the misinformation. But I am sure if you look round there is one that does have it somewhere. Failing that you may be reduced to actually buying one! I have not seriously looked as I don't have a Series 1!

What implications (in terms of road worhty/registration) does this have for me now?

Ignore my last thread - I Found it!

I have been searching long and hard for this number. Located on LHS about 1foot in from front part of main chassis arm.

    here goes... 57660760...

    Can you confirm series/year?

    Thanks
