    shifting the spare

Ok Im getting myself a spare wheel carrier for Big Red... (defender)

For those of you who have done this before.

Other than the 6 bolts holding the existing bracket on what else do I have to be worried about...

my main concerns are dust sealing for the rear door, Im expecting to have to move the lights on the back but I'll repalce them with custom jobs on the carrier itself.

What other things have others added to the carrier? Lights are a given, as are highlift mounts.

There will be 3 large holes in the door skin behind the carrier - you will need to rivet/glue a blanking plate where the carrier was.

What sort of carrier are you fitting? I have never seen one that obscured the lights.

Other useful things to attach are high-lift and shovel.

How big are the holes (big washers)
Couldn't the bolts just go back into their holes without carrier?

And yes door flex does let dust in not to mention hinge stress.

My spare(s) are going on the roofrack. How often do you have a flat.

Those bolt on carriers are bloody expensive

The holes are about 1". There are no bolts to go back in, they are attached to the tyre carrier.

It is best to keep weight as low as possible, but you are right - they are expensive - which is why I am making my own.

    $250 from bluetongue...

umm what 3 large bolts in the door?

I have what looks to be 6 10mm nuts with flat plates and washers..

Shovel I like, attachement loop for the tirfor rope/ recovery chains and snatch strap I like.

and the main reason I bought it was to get the weight off of the door and fitting a gas strut to hold the bloody thing open so the slightest puff of wind or slope doest have a ton of wheel and door trying to cut me in half and insert my torso/arm into the loadspace

Didn't realise the later type was different. The earlier type bolts flat against the door and has 2 (not three) holes where the locating hoop protrudes through.

    1. Hes selling me his cause it doesnt open with the rear door... however that is in hand...

when i get the pnuematics lined up properly in big red the gas shocks will be replaces with pnuematic actuators and sequencing valves all operated from a push button on the dash/central locking...

push a button and the carrier will swing open, then the door will open...

no air, no problem, start the engine and turn on the aircon/heater or if its at home plug in the shop air, or turn on the electric aux compressor.

    Done.

as I like the look of his old one, when I get it, If it works as well as I hope I will be bribable in to making them.
