    Thanks John...

    I guess this is the scenario and I would like to see what people would choose:

    You get a job doing research in Arnhem Land - 3-4 month trips at a time. Various seasons. One vehicle (the university cannot afford any more). You're based in FNQ - around Cairns. So you go out to AL, bum around for 3 months (including bush-walking and the like) and run back home to Cairns to do your report.

    Now. Tyre choices and why. Believe it or not, this is a serious question.

    Then someone on the forum can tell me if you can put all-steel radials on standard LR rims or do they need split rims?

    Read the site quoted by Simon - they are still a steel belted radial! And in any case, I am unaware of anything that holds air that CAN'T be staked.

    Very interesting site - note comments on tyre width!

    My experience is a bit dated, and perhaps the construction has changed, but I was using all steel radials on standard Landrover wheels forty years ago in the Simpson. I think you will find that it is possible to fit them to well base rims - just very difficult! I am not sure why Landrover has not offered split rims since about Series 2 (and then they were very rare), seeing that most Landcruisers and Patrols had them until recently.

    yep you can fit all steels to the standard rover rim.

    look at the rubber thats now on whats left of bug 2.0 (SIII SWB becomes a trailer thread) the cheapest, still legal, heaviest duty LT tyres I could get my hands on because for some reason I kill trailer tyres more than the tow vehicles tyres. ($10 for 2)

    I have my guesses as to why but wont go into it here.

    The rubber was fitted with my tyre pliers kit a rubber mallet and my 12v aircompressor.
