    Squeek wont go....Defender

Ok, so I realise I've posted this thread before, but I cannot find the source of the squeek in my dash (like a mouse is caught back there). I've taken the dash to bits, checked everything, tightened everything and pretty much hit everything, but not luck. Its driving me insane. If anyone can help I'd be stoked. The Squeek is in my 2001 Defender.

For reference, the squeek seems to be coming from in the dash, perhaps loosely behind the steering column or something. I'm facing the propsect of an 18hour drive with 'the squeek' so its getting serious.

    Cheers
    Jimmy

p.s. and yes, I've tried turning the stereo up to 11 and putting mouse traps in the car but so far the squeek is winning.

Squeaks are usually trim related so it might be worthwhile giving the dash mounting/contact points a hit with silicon spray.

A passenger can often help by holding various components to isolate these noises while you're driving (I assume it's only present while driving).

See if the door trim is rubbing.... That's where my squeek comes from.

My squeek was comeing from inside the steering column. Perhaps its the same squeek. It only appears on rough or corragated roads so I havn't bothered to fix it yet.

When you driving try putting pressure uupwards towards the windshield on the steering wheel and then the same pressure downwards towards your legs. When I did this my squeek went away and pinpointed where it was coming from.

Some sound advise (as always on this forum). cheers.

The squeek only happens when driving, but will squeek on even the most tinny tinny bump/dip or jolt, which makes me think something is very loose, though I can't find anything. It does get progressively worse the longer I drive though, and is usually not present for the first few minutes. Maybe its somethign that warms up to a squeek???

would a got dowsing of WD40 or CRC in teh dash and all about potential cause any problems?? possibly electrics??

    cheers

    Drive till it squeaks.

    Open the front vents.

Does that change or get rid of the squeak?

If it does, spray some silicon spray or INOX on the rubber strips.

Otherwise upload the squeak to youtube and then run it through a sound spectrum analyser at www.forensicdownloads.com and it will tell you what materials are causing the squeak.

    Just joking.

    Rob,

I tried putting some pressure on the steering column but nothing, then I tried putting a lot of pressure on the column and 'hey presto' no squeek. Its when I put upward pressure with my hands on the wheel and my knee into the column (has to be both, just hands or just knee still squeeks). I guess the question now is, what does that mean?? perhaps a can of CRC in there???

    thoughts anyone??

    cheers
    Jimmy
