    S1 Fitouts

Here is one option I have.....

    I have:
    86" 1955 SWB S1 bare chassis
    s2a engine 251.... suffix 'F'.
    S2a gearbox/tc suffix 'D'.

    I want:
minimal hotwork to chassis to make things fit
maximum ease of driving gear/engine/transmission fitment
enjoyable and reliable driving after fitment on road/bush

    Q1:
Should I insert the S1 mechanical clutch with a S2a bellhousing (instead of s2a hydraulic clutch)?

    Q2:
Will the crank pulley clear the front axle on full travel?

    Q3:
For the 86", what are the advantages of lighter 2.25L S2a engine over the Holden 186 lump? (In terms of bush bashing and some on road use)

    Q4:
For the S1 109", should I keep the S2a engine in there or replace it with the 186 Holden Red?

    Something to ponder..............

The Land Rover gearing is too low for the Holden motor. On my SIIA with a Holden 186 I could spin wheels around corners and break axles, but cruising speed was 80kph. With a 2.25 Land Rover motor I couldn't spin wheels (less stress on the transmission) and I ould sit on 110kph on the flat. Off road the Holden motor has some issues (which can be rectified) regarding oil pickup on steep ascents.

My advice is keep the 2.25 motors in both cars. For more power be particular about which carby you choose - the best standard carby IMHO is the Zenith 36IV. The next best performance mod is to have the cam ground. I had mine ground so that all the valves opened 5 degrees sooner and closed 5 degrees later (similar specs to the 6cyl cam) and that worked really well. Extractors help a little, but the 2.25s exhaust manifold is pretty good. A high compression head helps a bit more - given that here you'd be using good fuel (as opposed to central Africa in the 1950s). I also put a Weber 32/36 double barrel carby on mine, which is all the go according to the US forums, but the best value came from the cam grind.

    Yes. Bolt in job.

    Q2:
Will the crank pulley clear the front axle on full travel?

See my other post - not a major problem

The 2.25 is not lighter, but it suits the gearing better and is designed for off road use - doesn't worry about steep slopes like the the Holden does.

    Q4:

I would not put the Holden engine in it either for the reasons noted

Q1. Can you fit a hydraulic clutch to the floor mounted pedal on the SI? I haven't worked much on SIs, but from memory, it's probably going to look more authentic with a mechanical clutch. But I suppose a hydraulic clutch may be easier to live with.

Q2. If it won't just extend your rubber axle bump stops by putting a spacer behind them.

    THanks agian JDNSW.

I still have a niggling issue about ID engine 25192439F.

I am told the late s2a engines start with 241...

    where does my engine lye?

    I need specs on it.

According to www.fourfold.org your engine is early 1965. I think the 241 engines were S2. But have a browse of this site.

    Hi JDNSW

Where in this link does it refer to my 251 engine?

25192439F is my serial number not 241....

    Confirm?
