A trick my Dad showed me - and it's only possible if you can remove the inner from the outer.

And that was to put it in a pot of engine oil and heat it, being carefull not to set light to the oil of course. He said it would 'soak' into all the strands and stay lubed for ages.

The other he used on cables was sewing machie oil - he said it was light enough to go through the outer but thick enough to do the job.

G'day id rather replace the cable with a stainless cable from a bike hand break and use teflon outer any good bike shop can supply you with the items you will need even the crimps to put on the ends and it will outlast any other crap steel cable lube it once a year and never have this problem again

For lube id go with atf as its thin oil with a high viscosity and wont wash out as easy

    cheers

Most cables on Rangies etc are nylon lined.
I am afraid your cable sounds like it has been like Icarus.

Hot cooking oil will work if you cant get it off (assuming no cable damage)
    so will sewing oil

But I personally recomend Lanolin. (major component of the goop in a spray can of inox.

If you can withdraw the inner cable from the outer, clean both with kerosene, allow the inner to dry and blow out the outer cableCoat the inner with graphite powder. Just roll it up and push it into the tin of powder, wipe it with a clean rag and reassemble. This fixes speedo cables that get the flickers also. Even roman catholics can use this procedure as withdrawal is approved by the Vatican.

Do the clean and use a teflone lubricant. You can get it from cycle shops.
