D1 disco pulling right under brakes

Man I am posting like mad today.

Next problem on the disco: pulls to the right under brakes. Not under light braking, but then 'all of a sudden' under heavy braking. Pretty bad, too, enough to make you wander into the right hand lane if you aren't yanking left on the steering wheel.

Now, I had the wheels off today and I thought that I would check out the brakes while I was at it. All pads are less than 30,000 km old (and all look fine), none were jammed and all of the pistons slid back smoothly when I pushed them, front, rear left and right. No problems there (apparently!).

It's not the tyres or tyre pressures, all the tyre pressures are cool and it hasn't changed with 2 new front tyres (on the old steel rims) nor with the 4 new tyres and alloys.

It's not the alignment (at least, I don't THINK so) because it tends to pull a wee bit left if anything.

I don't think it's worn shockies, they are less than 5,000 km old, and it did it with the shagged out old ones as well.

It's also not some stuffed wheel bearing, because the wheels all spin smoothly (again, checked it when I had the old girl jacked up).

It's got me buggered. I thought that I was going to find some glazed or jammed pads, a jammed piston or a leaking axle seal dumping diff oil on the brakes, but none of the above!

According to the manual, my (300 tdi) disco has one brake line for the front and one for the back, so one assumes that both sides should get equal pressure.

Ideas? I'm fast running out of them.

PS one other thought, it does make a bit of a sharp cracking sound when you really slam on the anchors, not sure if this is coming from a caliper or a suspension noise, I suspect the latter but I could envisage that it's a pad not sliding properly on the caliper pins or something (??)

collapssed brake line to the rhs acting as a partial one way valve perhaps or you could also have a little contamination of the pads on the left hand side, and the rights are working correctly and the lefts are "slipping" give the lefts a touch up with a laping block (flat slab of watered oil free cement will do nicely) and see what that does for you.

    Thats probably the 'clacking' sound.....

Also check the tie rod ends for play if not already done.

Mine was doing exactly the same thing recently. Just took the kids out for a drive and was pumping the brakes hard to see if I could discover anything. All of a sudden there was a clunk, the brake pedal went in a bit, and the brakes are back to normal. Don't know what it was; bit of air in a line somewhere, pad out of place perhaps....?

i think i would look further, that doesn't sound like a good thing.
maybe you had a stone or something stopping the pads, but go and look into it as that sort of thing doesn't give me a warm and cosy feeling

Similar to the symptoms I had. In my case it was the hub seal that was leaking (the one behind the inner wheel bearing) and some oil-grease blend was fouling the inner side of the brake disc. You should be able to see it on the brake pad, though. Otherwise, Justin's guess seems very reasonable to me.

my 110 was pulling left under hard braking, i replaced the rear pads and it now pulls up straight. i may have had a sticking rear piston or the worn out pads were the problem. do you have ABS?

Yes I'd be looking at the back brakes being that it doesn't occur til you stand on them that bit harder. Does the steering fight you or does it just weave to the right & try to get unsettled?

Don't forget to check out the caliper piston seals....

Otherwise, the hub oil seal would be where I'd be looking.
