    Hot transfer case

    G'day,
recently bought a TD5 130 crew cab with 180,000 k's. After driving ( flat road, no load) 200 k's at 100 kph was looking underneath (as you do) and found the transfer case was hot. Not to hot to touch but to hot to hold bare hand on for more than a few seconds. The gearbox was cool in comparsin. Plenty of oil but extremly thick and dirty. Have now replaced the oil with Castrol Syntrax. Will check temp next time I drive somewhere far enough.
Am wondering if anyone else has done the touch test and whether it is normal for the transfer case to get so hot?
    thanks

If you think about it logically the transfer case is a lot smaller than the gearbox, however it still does the same amount of work. Therefore talking of heat displacement and taking size into account it would be hotter than the gearbox.

    Is this right?

Yes the case is unlocked, jacked it up and spun wheels to make sure.

Does the 130 have a gbox oil cooler? That should keep the gbox a bit cooler.

I thought Castrol Syntrans was for the gearbox not the t/case, it uses the thicker viscosity 75w90 (approx. same as the diffs)

    Kandy,
Castrol website advises Syntrans 75W/85 for the gearbox and Syntrax 75W/90 for transfer case. I don't know the difference but both are as dear as poison.

They are full synthetic, hence the price.
