Not sure that Land Rover have ever made a decent engine. All the good ones have been sourced from somewhere else.

I dunno about that , reckon the Tdi is a pretty decent engine, you look after it, it looks after you. I'm coming up on 300k and a water pump is all that's been changed(@250k).

I have a Jap diesel in my RR, and I think toyota actually make some really good, reliable engines. ( Some, i said, not all!)

I have a Lexus LS400 and a Rangie, I love the reliability and smoothness of the Lexus, and over 120,000km I've just serviced it, and fitted tyres and brake pads. Oh, and an alternator. But the Rangie wins hands down for character, drivability and usefullness.
Just my 20 cents worth there!

G'day all ive been thinking bout doing a similar conversion but with a nissan vh45 but haven had a look at the pros n cons yet as i think it would be a better eng than a tojo jobbie ..

Anyone herd of this sort of conversion into a rover as id like to here about it id rather make up an adaptor to run the rangie box and t/case with this combo and run the engin on lpg only so i dont have to run the eng management any thoughts would be nice ...

    cheers

I had a look at this conversion as I have an '80 Rangie and an Infinity front cut. It is doable but not a simple job, it's a big lump of an engine and would have to sit back into the firewall or very high to clear the steering box. I don't think it's a better engine than the Lexus.
    It may be a Toyo...but it's a beautiful engine

Here's some data on the 1UZ-FE

    Capacity: 3968
    Valves: 32
    Cams: 4
    Kw: 194@5400
    Nm: 365@4600
    Compression: 10.1
    Fuel: 91 RON
    Weight: 175 kg
    Redline: 6250

As I stated earlier, the torque is produced quite high in the rev range.
Not realy suitable for a 4wd.
    (still a nice engine though!)

Just as a side issue, here is the data for a P76
(yeh, I'm probably a little biased)
    Capacity: 4414
    Valves: 16
    Cams: 1
    Kw: 143@4250
    Nm: 386@2500
    Compression: 9.0

The old 2.25 petrol was IMHO, is probably the other contender for best Land Rover motor. While it was crude by Toyota standards, it looked after you, even if you didnt look after it......

While all the Jap V8's are beautiful pieces of engineering, an injected holden 5.0 would probably be the simplest conversion as its tried and proven with all adaptor parts etc available, also has a good low down torque. Chevs fit even better than holdens due to narrower 'V'.

The simplest and cheapest 'conversion' of all is probably to fit a 3.9i ex Discovery, - buy a wrecked Disco, use what you need and sell the rest.
As has been said, less power than the other options but less $$ and less hassles. Actually, it would be even simpler and cheaper to do a top end overhaul of the 3.5 and replace the cam - it all depends on how much power you want and how much time and $$$ you want to put into it.
