    its pretty standard......mine does it too......its just heat transfer from the engine and gearbox and transfer.......then finally the handle.....

    grab the metal part of your gearstick....or feel the metal floorpan or transmission tunnel......you also get the hot air from around the engine
    flowing through the tunnel......which is where the handbrake lever is mounted......



    when it gets too hot......its just the land rovers way of telling its time to pull over for a reviver......
    you know....stop revive survive.......i think that means a pie and a beer......
    gives things a chance to cool down.......

    Thanks also DefenderZook. I had heard that the handbrake in the defender lock the transmission, and I was worried that something nasty was happeneing with the transmission. Is it okay if I quote you to the wife in regards to beer and pie stops on hot handbrake? (Now I just need to rig it up with a handbrake heater...)

    Just had the thought that when the "handbrake temperature gauge" get too hot you were probably working pretty hard in 5th gear. I have spoken to people that have put an oil temp gauge in to the LT77 gearbox (disco 1) and found that there was a significant reduction in oil temp just by driving at the same speed but in 4th gear. So you could use it as a sign to change down. This gear is 1:1 so uses no gears. (except transfer case. In pratice i have seen that it is better to tow a heavy load using 4th not 5th. Don't know about the Td5 gearbox though.

    tcase and gearbox is essentially same same but your not working the engine so hard in 4th as you do in 5th so there is less "latent" heat coming out of the engine and more airflow from the fan which is engine driven so you have 2 things working in your favor....
