Put the old cap and rotor back on, if they arent OE they play up.
This coil is for use with a ballast resistor. If you don't have one you could have possibly damaged it internally. 12 volts constantly through a 7 volt (approx) coil won't do it any favours at all.Originally Posted by RRV80

They make bang and oil everywhere, learnt that at 14 on a paddack bomb hotwired coil to run it, took along time butOriginally Posted by BigJon
I can see that happening on an old oil filled coil. The GT40R is not oil filled, but could still fail due to the high voltage.Originally Posted by rovercare
thanks i will, its rainign now so not yet though, i also forgot to mention the IGN light doesnt come on on the dash either anymore when you turn on the ignition. ill try all that stuff.
Is it possible, becuase i hav tried a few different wiring order onto the points, that something has earhted out and i blew the condensor?
had a gt40r on it, looks like it was ancient, and the gt40r coils are oil filld.

Do you have a multimeter?
If not, get one. A cheapy will do.
Disconnect the -ve coil lead (the one that goes to the dizzy)
Measure the resistance (continuity) between this lead and GND while opening and closing the points.
Should go 0 ohm then open circuit.
If this is working and you have 12V at the coil +ve, then I'd suspect the coil.
If it's not, then you stuffed something up.
Check continuity to GND of all components in the dizzy.
My Rangie has 2 wires going to the +ve of the coil.
One is the full 12V from the start switch.
The other has resistance wire in it and drops the voltage to 9V (I think).
The 12V line may be broken. However it will push start (oops, just read it's an auto)!
A test globe will not show up all problems. Get a multimeter and learn how to use it in Volts & Ohms.

Ok, What do i need to go electronic, how does it work, what needs to be retained in the dist (might also add it had duel fuel but i never use gas) heard alot of people convert to mallroy, And how do i find out which dizzy i have or do i have to take it out?
What brands can i get, ive heard luminention or something, ptronix, mallroy etc? and price? ans where?

You would have the same problem with any other vehicle. It's just not RoversOriginally Posted by RRV80

well off to find out why that is, 'cause that is perhaps the answer.
i don't know the wiring system on your truck, i am sure there others here that do, i will leave that to them.
but try to follow the wiring [which may have been modified over the years] to establish where the ign sw gets its pwr from - there is probably a fuse or a broken wire somewhere, and as you're not in a brand new jigger there could be a wire that only needed a tiny short or something to fail
jump from the battery direct to the coil, and try cranking it,
before i write a hundred lines of how to's
With all the faffing about you may have blown the main ign fuse if there is no ign light.Originally Posted by RRV80
