    Won't Start.....why...*crys*

1984 range rover 3sp Auto Twin Carb point ignition all original never rebuilt or anything.

Was missing, has sinsce i bought it in july06, Anyway heres the deal, got some new leads, cap and rotor button, fitted them, wasnt much better, bought new plugs, a little better, but not perfect, new coil, million times better, nearly perfect, ordered new points and condesor, when they came in i fitted them, and ever since, she dont start, winds over, get fuel wont start. i changed the points and condensor back over to the old ones still wont go, i cant get the coil to fire a spark at all, the wire that goes formthe points to the coil negative was dodgy so i put a new terminal on, still nothing, have tried nearly everything i can think off, my boss wont help me (mechanic) becasue its a range rover and other reasons (he is a toyota man) + dont really have time at work and its not registerd atm so i dont want to get it towed.

I cleaned the contacts before i put them in, but i dont know whats wrong, ive run out of ideas

Double check your assembly of the parts in the correct order. It may be shorting straight out because it's assembled incorrectly.

I'll see if I can find a Diag.

    Cool

Not familiar with your model. Does it have a resistor in the ignition circuit? If the resistor is blown, that will break\ cut the ignition circuit. Failing that, double check everything again. Primary static timing, points breaker gap, dwell angle ( a function of timing and gap combined) spark plug gap. Are you sure all electrical connections are right way around?

All ICE's (internal combustion engine's) are actually pretty simple in their needs. Some woof juice, and a spark at the right time, and bang she goes. 1cyl, 2 cyl, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, all same same. Even worked on some oddball engines with multiple crank and cylinder configurations in my time, all same same, fuel air and spark at the correct time, no worries.

It will be something so simple in the end you will want to kick yourself for overlooking it.

    Shorty.

    does it fire at all?,
only three things can cause it not to run
    ignition
    fuel
    mechanical
so if it was going, but missing when you got it, was it ignition, or mechanical?
fuel won't cause a miss fire, but lack of it will.
have you done a compression check?
if it is old and was misfiring, was it backfiring or just missing?
just missing points to plugs and dist. cap. backfiring points to valves.
now i would go through every step again, check plug leads and firing order, get that sorted and check the ignition timing again, if it is backfiring as you crank it , most likely the timing is out.
there is a lot more i could say, but you try a few things and see what you find.

    G'day RRV80

Check the little carbon brush in the centre of the Dist Cap is still there, or the little nylon bush on the points post and pigtail wire to the points and condenser are on the right way

just to be stupid when you pulled the points out you put them back in the same way around, got the right set of point and have the clearances adjusted right..

I did a similar thing with my v8 disco... when i re assembled it after cleaning the sensor (electronig ignition but same princaple) I put it back together just enough out that it was firing at so close to BDC as it didnt matter.. To this day I have no idea how i manged it.

grab and old spark plug and gap it to about 3mm then wrap a hose clamp around the hex head with a wire attached so that you can earth it via the wire.. use that as your fault finding plug. Place a lead onto the coil direct then onto the test plug so you can fiddle with the guts of the dizzy with the cap off and see if shes sparking or not, Saves a smeg load of time... (you can also bodge an aligator clip on. I'll take pics of mine if you need them)

get yourself a flat blade screwdriver....with a plastic handle......
with the dizzy cap off and the ignition on......open and close the points with the screwdriver to see if anything is arcing or sparking.......

then try the screwdriver across the actual contacts of the points......

you did clean the contacts before you fitted the points i hope.........
and had a look to make sure there was nothing caught in them....such as lint from the rag you cleaned them with......?

its not uncommon.....ive had it happen several times......

    Talking

Harry is right, Zook is right, 4bee is right, Dave is right. Uncle Ho is right. Everybody is right.

It will always be simple, and you will kick yourself later.

PS trying out a new web browser, not sure about it yet. The site looks somehow different.
