 Tdi Smoking Occasionally

My 190 k Tdi has an occassional smoking habbit! What gives? Clouds of blue smoke on idle and under acceleration, exhaust smells very strongly of unburnt diesel (not oil which you would expect for blue), very rough running and no power. Has occured a few times but only lasts for a 100k's or so and then goes away for a while but then re-occurs. Had it checked and serviced (stopped smoking on the drive there of course!) by a Rover specialist who says nothing obviously wrong. I have owned it from new so I know when it is not happy!
Any ideas?

					Hi
Sounds like you've got a fuel problem. Probably air leak somewhere, so your engine is burning oil, hence blue smoke. Good chance it is your fuel lift pump has a hole in the diaphragm, notorious problem. It is the kind of thing where you can have a tiny air leak, not enough to stop the vehicle from going, but only shows up under load.
Another possibility is that you have a dent in your fuel tank and the pickup in the tank is getting blocked - I'm currently suspecting that's my problem.
Search the site for fuel problem or similar, it has been covered thoroughly before.
Fuel system problems start with the breather on the tank, dirty sludge in tank, water in fuel, dirty sedimenter if you have one, clogged or holed fuel lines, fuel filter needs replacing, lift pump or lift pump pipes, fuel injection pump (you don't want it to be this $$$), loose injectors, crack in fuel return hoses.
hth
Cheers,
Simon.
