Thumbs down Need some help! Whats this?

After doing some decent offroading, I managed to punture a tyre and damage thos, whatever it is. It doesnt seem to be a crucial part of the Disco, but whatever it is, as can be seen from the photos, it is held on with some decent wire. It is a 95 Disco V8, and it was located just below the forward propeller shaft uni-joints, has a steel outer casing and an inner rubber type material. Any help? Need it kinda bad.....

    Thanks for your help

Harmonic balancer ain't it? Be thankful it had the lanyard on or it could have gone anywhere.

Cannot see the pics due to the server I'm on but from your discription it sounds like the front harmonic dampner. Discodave dropped his a few months back. There is a thread on it but I cannot find it at the moment.

harmonic balancer is close enough... you dont actually need it, providing you like the free massage thats going to intermittantly come through the steering and front end.

If you haven't already done so.. just unbolt it. Put the end of the steering damper back on and drive it around a bit. Either you'll notice some extra vibration or you won't. If you do, send me a PM - I still have my one sitting around here somewhere - I took it off a long time ago and haven't missed it.

Geez, happy it isnt anything bad! It didnt look critical, but just wanted to check! Thanks fellas, much appreciated! I'll remove it and if im concerned I'll weld it back on. I suppose that isnt too bad damage considering the tracks I was doing and other stuff. Heres a pic of how I broke it. Lots of spinning wheels and sand up some steep hill.

Also lost my tyre. Time to invest in some A/T's. Anyone want to suggest one with a good sidewall protection which isnt LT?

As said harmonic balancer. Leave it off see what happens, my 97 Disco had one and it was noticable when it was removed so I had to replace it. LR only put it on some vehicles in the Tdi's and from memory it's not a listed LR part number, but it is a LR part

My 1992 Rangie had one, when I changed to diesel etc, I removed it and haven't noticed a thing. Maybe the diesel makes its own vibrations that cancel out the other ones???(!)

He he - that looks familiar! Mine broke off in similar circumstances.
There's no point in trying to weld it on as it wouldn't work the way it's meant to. It's actually a round weight held on by a V8 engine mount connected to the bracket that bolts on the diff. It's the rubber part of the mount which splits appart. If you want to restore it just get a replacement engine mount but the odds are you won't notice it's gone - I haven't.
