    Question Checking diffs. are locked.

    Hi everyone.
I've just got a 300Tdi Defender and although the lever goes over to the diff locked position, no light comes on upon the dash. How can I check that the thing is actually working?
    Thanks.
    Alan.

Jack 1 wheel up, leave gearbag in neutral, engage diff lock, wheel should turn maybe 1/3rd of a turn and be locked, now disengage and it should spin freely

FIX THE LIGHT, before you do bad fings, like driving locked on asphalt

Engage diff lock, jack up a front wheel with the car in gear & see if you can turn it, seems to be the test. If no, then it is locked. Could be the switch or the bulb otherwise.

    Diffs. locked.

Thanks for the replies, I've checked behind the dash but haven't yet looked at the switch. Is this near the lever and accessible by removing the cover in the cab?
    Thanks.

Have you jacked up a wheel yet?

The CDL only locks the centre diff (in the back of the transfer case) and works by engine vacuum. The light only lights up when the CDL is fully engaged.

If the CDL is working when you have a wheel jacked up, get a multimeter and check is there is power at the light.

Failures are usually only the bulb, or some of the rubber parts of the switch perish and leak.

    Hi Alan
Assuming yours is the same as the Disco transfercase(should be).
Get underneath, look feel above the area where the front propshaft is. You will see the lever that comes down and turns the acuator.Once you are familiar get somebody to get inside and move the lever it maybe a case the lever isnt quite turning far enough to full engage the CDL.My homemade CDL does this occasionally, once its turned as far as it goes turn it a bit more with a pair of pliers, see if that lights up your light.
Not sure how they are adjusted,I had a D1/Rangie lever for a while,INTERESTING!!!! Im sure a manual will show how its done.
