    Bouncy Steering wheel

    Just a quick one,

When driving downhill on steep declines Bulli pass or down from the blue mountains I can feel a shudder in the steering. More descriptive, If I hold the steering very lightly and applying around 30% braking the steering wheel jerks left to right on a medium interval around 1cm left to right. The rest of the time things feel good. I have recently replaced the brake pads, discs and steering damper? Could this be caused by a broken calliper?

    Cheers

This sort of effect on braking just about has to be a brake problem. If you had not replaced the discs, I would have said it was a warped or contaminated disc - in fact, it could be something as simple as greasy fingerprints on a disc, or alternatively a rust patch. It is possible that it is a loose or broken caliper, although I would not expect those symptoms from the caliper. Other possibilities would be an out of balance or unevenly worn front tyre or a bent wheel, although any of these would be expected to show vibration not just on braking.

If it DOESN'T happen braking normally on a flat surface it might not be that simple. I'm still trying to diagnose and fix the 100kph wobbles I sometimes get in the Disco.

If you are going downhill and braking, there will be more of a rotational force on the front end that braking on the flat - as in the front axle wants to rotate forwards with the wheels. This might be the only situation where you have enough play in the suspension bushes.

Doubt it's a broken caliper. Given the forces that these things apply they'll either be 100% good or damn near 100% bad.

To qualify all of this, I am STILL looking for the problem with my Disco!
