I was thinking of the 'pump' (? - relay?) for the ACE that is located underneath on the RHS , just under the Driver's door. That general area is where I often hear the 'clunk' type noise from. A few years ago I managed to get some bits of blue metal gravel wedged between that box and the chassis, ended up making a fearsome noise very time the box activated as it was all transmitted through the chassis.
Didn't know at the time what was going on, the sound brought out that horrible thought- 'this does not sound good, it does sound expensive!' Thankfully. it turned out that the problem was limited to the duration that the gravel was lodged in between the box and the chassis.
thank for all the replies just this morning i started it up and no noise at all This noise is only aparent IMMEDIATELY AFTER START UP but as i said it s not every time???
I would agree with Baz and say its the ABS Modulator testing/pressurising. On my TD5 it does it makes noise at differing levels. I think itf its a quick, less than 1/2 second or so, and quite distinct, then its almost certainly the ABS doing a self test. Which is a good thing.
Also, regarding the ABS Modulator, I keep getting told in the club that frequent brake system fluid changes (like every 10000km) or so is very good maintenance on the ABS Modulator. AMV in Melbourne have recommended this course of action, as they believe there is a link with not changing the fluid often enough and ABS modulators failing. It has to be cheap maintenance.
Hi all , this is my first post in this greate site..ok noise in the TD5 came after a service and only after it wamed up. And at low rev. had a listen with a bit of broom handle .It came from the oil filter on top of the motor. The one that rotates. went to a REAL land rover guy 20yrs + exp..got a gen.part took the ,what turned out to be a cheep maybe chineeees filter out. put gen.one in ..presto no noise.the cheep one was taken back to the service place and "TOLD" what happened turned out that the cheep filter has a thiner brass bush on top and lets the filter hit the filter cover when the oil wamed up .Simple dont use cheep chineees parts .I dont get my services there any more. Do them my self much better.. hope this helps some one eles..
thanks for a greate sight Robert42
If the noise is the ABS self testing as said above you will feel the brake pedal pluse after start up, mine does this but not on every time I start up, strange.
If not this get it checked out.
