Thank you Zook and Ralph, I tipped a cupful of regular oil into the right rocker cover, after removing the pcv, and no rattles - after 20 minutes running the motor ar idle, then for a five minute drive, then the oil light lit up again....

given the amount of crud in the rocker / head area - a blockage is entirely possible...

JohnE visited a few days ago and having had a general look over, suspected a head gasket as the root cause..... hmmmmmmm......

I'll do the various pressure tests and see what happens....

But , I'm no longer having oil spewing from the bolts that hold down the rocker covers, so that's one achievement.

I suspect that the right side bank is the problem, it is (was) the rattly side, whereas the left bank seems to be less obvious, but I haven't pulled off the lhs rocker cover as thats a pig of a job, however...........

    Cheers, GQ

A week later and all is well, thank you to all concerned.

the 3.5V8 is much cleaner in its oil channels than it was and is running just fine - but I have learnt something fascinating - oil sludge exists... and via the pcv wil gum up other components

when i bought the new spark plugs from our local whizz, and discussing this drama, he said - no sludge? probably explains why your tappets are now a bit rattly..... oh well.......
