Thread: How to connect a UHF CB

Dawg, I had ARB fit mine (GME 3200) directly under the CD/radio. Was a bit fiddly (so they say) and they needed to pack some foam between the units and lash them together with cable ties, but it's very secure and looks good.

It's also common practice to fit the to the front or side of the cubby box, especially when using the GME 3400 split system. From what I understand it's a DIY job that way, but I'm pretty happy with the location front and centre. Will get some photos on the w/end but I'm sure you can visualise.

I also thought about the roof mounted console but couldn't justify it with only 1 radio. I recall that GreyLandy fitted one or looked at fitting one and removed it due to it reducing headroom too much. GreyLandy also fitted his 3400 on the cubby.

I have a Uniden with the detachable front, and have the main bit attached to the left side of the cubby box. That way you only need to run cabling from inside the battery compartment. The head unit is screwed to the dash just to the left of the steering wheel. I take it out when not in use.

I took the lining out of the roof and made up a ladder out of angle iron. It pop rivets to the the rib that runs between the tops of the b/c posts and the one that runs across the top of the windscreen. Predrilled the main rails at 20mm intervals.
I ran the aerial cables up the left hand side of the windscreen behind the plastic capping and the power cables up the right hand side, then passed them both across the top of the windscreen so they pop out where the interior light lives.
I then put the roof lining back in place and made an extension box for the interial light to drop it about 50mm so that the aerial and power cables could be brought out. I used 50mm to ensure clearance between the hot light and the cables and to allow the back of the radio to slip into it.
Its then a simple matter of screwing the radio mounts into the the pre-drilled holes and connecting up the power. If the radios are mounted at an angle to the roof so that they actually sit horizontally or sloping slightly down towards the back of the vehicle, the back of a second radio will slip into the gap above the face of first radio, thus hiding all the wires at the back of the radio.
When you remove the radios in the future just push some of the standard roof trim plugs into the holes and remove the interior light extension box.

I have mine slotted down beside the driver's seat where it is almost invisible with the wiring going under the mat on the transmission tunnel to the dash. The only drawback is if I look down at it with my sunnies on the polarised lenses make the UHF display go black since it's rotated 90 degrees.

Not wanting to hijack, but is there an easy power pickup in a D1 for a radio to be located close to the console ? will using the cigi lighter power be ok ?

GMETX4600 Fitted to front of cubby which I moved back by about 40mm. It's wired directly to the main battery.

You are better off wiring back to the battery for the positive but if you want a pickup there is always the electric mirror switch or similar. Most power only comes on with the ignition at I or II so if you want to be able to use the radio with the car off, the battery is an easier option.

But if you do this, remember that the UHF will run the battery flat in about a week (or less if there is a lot of chatter on it). Don't ask how I know!
