    Holes above the cam???

    G'day.

Just a quick question. I have a 2.25 diesel in my Series IIA. Towards the rear of the block, just above the fuel lift pump, there are two small holes in the block. They seem to weep a fair bit of oil down that side of the engine. What are they there for? Are they for use when drifting out cam bearings? If so, would it affect cam lubrication to just block the external openings with some filler to stop the leak? If and when I ever change my cam bearings, it would be a simple job to drill out the filler.....so the only worry I have is what is actually at the bottom of those holes and if filling them will do any damage. I'd really appreciate some advice as soon as anyone can give it.

    Cheers.

G'day All, Wally I had a look in my Wksp manual, it clearly shows the holes but makes absolutley no reference to them at all with regard to replacing cam/bearings, or an open gallery into the block, I think they are blank holes!.
My 2 1/4lt petrol engines have them as well and also in that section of the manual re cam bearings again they are clearly shown but no reference to them, I would suspect that you might have a oil weep from either the under the tappet cover or the oil line to the head and it is just getting trapped there, anyway there are much more knowledgeable people here than me that might be able to shed some further light on subject cheers mate Dennis

so far As ive been able to work out they are holes that are drilled as part of building the block and should be plugged...

either that or for bore alignment (drill them down in the right spot and if the gallery that goes across hits em its lined up

or pilot holes to get galleries further down the block...

Going by the 300Tdi (developed from earlier 4cyl landie engines and same/similar cam bearings) they are where the oil ways (for cam bearings) are drilled through to the oil gallery. The bearing shell blocks off the hole on the outer side (hole in bearing shell lines up with the hole on the inner side), but mine were filled with silicone rubber (on outer side).

Yeah....that's kind of what I thought. I expect that the outward face of the bearing is meant to seal the external opening....my nervousness about blocking openings is simply in case I've got it wrong and affect the oil flow somehow. I actually do wonder if there is not really some oil making its way out between the bearing shell and the block as I have just cleaned the engine and after a few minutes running oil started to appear in the holes. It had not run down from anywhere....

Anyway, thanks for all your thoughts. I'll fill those holes, I reckon.
