Maby hot spots in the cyl 's causing the fuel to ignite after the spark is shut off tip warm water down the throat of the carby or through the throtle body while reving the engin at about 1500 rpm and watch the cr@p fly out the exhaust this will clean all the carbon deposits in the combustion chambers and may fix your prob

Warm water works better than cold as it dosent cause a cold rush in the chambers i do this regular to engins as it decarbons the chambers and reduces the risk of hot glowing carbon deposits ignighting the fuel after the spark is shut off

I bought a new MG-B in 1965 and it used to run on from new. It needed higher octane petrol than the super grade available here at that time. I also had an EH Holden at the same time and it needed higher octane petrol also, bu it didn't run on, just pinged. Adding benzol/methyl benzine at 5 of petrol to 1 of benz. fixed the Holden but not the MG. Probably combustion chamber design.

My old Fiat 124 used to run on if you turned it off at idle. The simplest way to stop when you wanted to was to park, rev it with a short sharp stab of the pedal and kill it just before lifting your foot. It would just spin down normally. Never really bothered trying to fix the problem once I worked that out.
