Never had the light come on.............but

Once, BEFORE upgrading to Synthetic and an additional cooler , was climbing a few very slow and loaded tracks...and smelled the trans fluid.

Got home, checked the fluid and it was Darker than it should've been after only 10'oook's.

Dropped the fluid, Flushed the converter, New filter/strainer ( cut the old one open to check for metal and all ok!!)

Fitted another ( modern and more efficient cooler) in line moving other slightly, Filled with synthetic....( if u want .p.m. me for the details as i do'nt want to advertise )

Since then , no problems at all , markedly better shift quality, and surprising small improvement in economy.

I had also sorts of problems which totalled about $5K while trying to sort it. Check that the ATF cooler isn't just plugged full of mud - thats all mine was, but despite cleaning the radiators this one was still blocked.

Being a conversion I don't have the light but I do have a guage. Mine has been moded to cope with the heat as the first one was cooked to buggery. To keep mine cool it has a water cooler and an air cooler with thermo fan.

300,000k, its not slipping is it?

I;m with Damien, at 300k the trans would very likely have a fair amount of friction material missing, excess clutch clearances and probably noticeable pressure losses. I would however try the synthetic and extra cooler first, as it could give you some more lifespan, and is considerably cheaper than a new 'box. It is worth a try I think. The factory cooler is quite inadequate in high ambient temps and slow speeds, I've fitted a cooler from a P38A to a 97 Tdi and found it to handle any conditions well since then. Even slogging through sand and towing etc.
