I;m with Damien, at 300k the trans would very likely have a fair amount of friction material missing, excess clutch clearances and probably noticeable pressure losses. I would however try the synthetic and extra cooler first, as it could give you some more lifespan, and is considerably cheaper than a new 'box. It is worth a try I think. The factory cooler is quite inadequate in high ambient temps and slow speeds, I've fitted a cooler from a P38A to a 97 Tdi and found it to handle any conditions well since then. Even slogging through sand and towing etc.
