Both harnesses can be flushed and cleaned, just takes a bit of time. The main culprit is the failure of the o rings in the socket that allows oil to pass and enter the loom.
As for 2 looms?? How often did these fail apart. If close together I would be questioning the o ring instalation and ask for proof a new unit was put in.

big red will get 2 attacks done on her in order...

    1. The ECU will relocate to the back of the cubby box where my 2 way usually sits

    2. a breakout box will be made external to the head using 1mm squared enamaled wire and some heatshirnk to cover the solder joints....

    3. If both those stop the leak from killing the ECU in the next 20k Km Then I'll put a new head side harness in after sealing it with some aircraft grade sealastic.

This is a problem that has had me a litte worried for ages now IVe got it Im happy..

Oh the oil hit my ECU at some stage during the weekend trip and so far no hassles

I am going to fix it once and for all...

    Hi Robert,

I was going to do the same if I'll get oil there. I noticed the harness near engine plug has some sort of loop/bend up, and at the moment it is clean.

Question for all: does the engine oil eat wires (plastic cover) or not?

    Cheers,
    Ruslan

I had some oil under the drivers seat around the ecu that I cleaned up with shellite and a rag, but how do you flush the harness?

Soon as this old thread has been dug up - what about using a transistor? Not sure exactly what the latency of them is, but they are pretty damn quick. I would think in the order of a few nano seconds?

Wild idea ... brought on by tooooo much rain late at night:

Since the aim seems to be to somehow prevent oil finding its way to the ECU along the wires: could you not cut the harness outside the rocker cover and rejoin using something like for example: 40 Pin Header Terminal Strip - Jaycar Electronics or heavier gauge depending on number of wires/voltage/current requirements and house the joiner in a 'plastic' box attached to the rocker cover via one of the existing rocker cover bolts... Could even put some absorbant foam or whatever inside the box to mop up whatever oil finally gets in there... then you just need to replace the absorbant foam whenever... thoughts?

Far easier to just treat the whole injector harness as a consumable item and just replace it every 2 years or so. At 24 quid that's only 12quid a year plus some time and a rocker cover gasket.
I put some RTV silicone on the plugs on mind before I installed it all all good so far 1 year later.

x2 on just replacing it when it shows signs of leaking.

my td5 130 looked like it had been leaking for years when I got it.
box under drivers seat had rags placed on the floor which were soaked with oil.

someone had even gone to the trouble of cutting the sheath off the injector wires 20mm before the ecu.

don't think it made any difference as the plug was soaked.

the oil also made no difference to the way the engine ran which I was quite surprised about after all the horror stories I had heard...
I simply changed the injector harness and gave the plug a good clean and the engine kept purring away as it always has

Injector codes are there to make adjustments down to Nanosec so I doubt it.

I think the loom would be long enough to reach. To remove the rocker cover you would just unplug each individual injector.
Thinks you will find that the whole crankcase and rocker cover is pressurised, more so with a turbo. PCV keeps it that way.

Is also the reason that EGR is such a problem with a diesel. Oil mist from the PCV muckies up the carbon from exhaust and makes a gooey sludge in the intake tract/manifold. (never mind reducing the oxygen in the intake air, and reducing combustion temperature [egr purpose])

How about, just remove the insulation at different points on the injector cables (so they don't touch), and then insulate the harness from everything else and allow the oil to drain out before it gets across to the computer plug. Pick the lowest point.

As a matter of interest, I had a "strap-on" performance upgrade from PSI in Europe. It had to be soldered into the loom in parallel. The opening of the insulation and the solder in the loom broke the "siphon". Never had a problem after that was fitted to a new replacement harness. (at least 10 yrs and and a couple of hundred thousand kms).

    Cheers
