You'll only need to worry about that on newly assembled engines. You also won't need to bother removing the glow plugs - the compression isn't that bad. Just remove the rocker cover and adjust as normal.

Over the weekend I want to check the valve clearances.
Haynes manual makes a note that if there is excessive valve clearances it is possible to damage tappet slides. The recommend turning the adjusters to eliminate all clearance from any loose rocker arms before turning the crankshaft to check clearances.
Just to check, we are talking about the same adjusters that set the valve clearances aren't we?
So remove glowplugs to assist with turning engine over, remove rocker cover, remove any clearance if excessive from valves then set up to adjust as per manual. Should I be rotating it slowly and checking for excessive valve clearances on every valve when setting it up to adjust the first?

I think I am seeing double, didn't someone ask the same question recently(now that I have said that, i can't find the particular post)
I found it easier to take out the glow plugs, and the real experts suggest turning the motor over with the starter.
In my opinion for ultimate safety,
no glow plugs= no compression,
no starter use= less likely hood of fuel cutoff solenoid opening.
Anyway thats just me, over cautious.

disconnect the plug on the fuel shutoff solonoid
turn over with a breaker abr on the alternator pulley but don't go wild on it.
Just make sure the oposing cylinder is rocking and the one your adjusting is at TDC.
Do it cold and just make sure you check those little spacer shims on the valves ( or was that the Land Cruiser, can't remember maybe I shouldn't be lazy and check mine).
Don't even need the breaker bar...
With that feed to the solenoid on the fuel pump disconnected, you can just crank the engine on the starter.![]()

I dont like cranking the engine as you cant just do a little bit and you cant see (if your doing it on your own) when your in the right position.
If your doing it with some one it can be a bit dangerous.
At trade school they teach you to deffinatly not crank the engine when setting valve clearances for these reasons and more but its so long ago I cant remember.
It takes bugger all effort to do it properly so get the breaker bar out and give it a go.
Valve clearance should be 0.2mm (just under 8 thou). There are no shims, but there are caps on the valves which wear. Make sure all the caps are still there when you adjust, they have been known to wear through and disappear down into the engine.

thats the ones, the shims were on the cruiser and an absolute pain in the b#$
8 THOU /10 THOU as long as they are all the same it doesnt make a terrible amount of difference
