Thread: Is a rear diff able to be used in the front

There is no reason why you cannot use one as they are the same units (diff centres) there maybe some noise if the diffs have been well used, that is from the wear patterns on the Crown and Pinion, as when swaped they are rotating in the opposite direction

I want to be precise here.
I am talking the diff assembly , ie the whole diff including the nose , back to the UJ mounting plate.
I am considering buying a rear diff, and I want to avoid having to have it set up, which would be necessary if I swapped the diff centre ( ie crown wheel, planetary gears, cross shaft, inner moving case, bearings ) into my diff cover.
I know that the cover will bolt up, I guess I am unsure whether the nose is the same length etc etc.
Hence my question about whether anyone has actually done it.

They're identical, except the rear centres, the hole are usually full of crap where the damper bracket bolts to

I assume you understand that the front axle has to steer, and that we are only discussing swapping diff heads from front to rear? The earlier posts are not clear in this regard.

The centers are interchangeable with no problems done it many times
