    300Tdi Surging

    Hi,

Did a search but couldn't find anything. My 300tdi Disco has a surging effect between 1500 and 1900 rpm. It won't seem to hold a constant speed in that range. ie. Hold accel in neutral at 1500 and apply tiny more accel and it shoots to 1900. this creates a surge at about 60kmh which is quite annoying. Could it be the fuel pump going as car has done 230000, was thinking maybe governor sticking? Any Ideas apppreciated.

    Stu

Others would know more than me but definitely seems like fuel problem doesn't it. Check the sedimenter back near the fuel tank and your fuel filter. Otherwise fuel pump could be the culprit as you say.

Also check for air leaks/splits in the turbo hoses and connections to the intercooler etc are tight, and also that the hoses are not delaminating inside. This only takes a few minutes to pull them off and take a look.

    Where are you Stu?

I recon you need to take it to somewhere like Rankin diesel in Bayswater Vic or the like near you and get the pump checked out.

Normally when the govenor spring goes you end up with very little acceleration not a boost.

Is the speed increasing with the revs because if not the clutch may be slipping?

How does it pull away from a standing start?

    Does it smoke?

    If so what colour?
    Heavy black=unburned fuel,
light black=normal load (still unburned fuel but govenor is feeding fuel in), white=cylinder not firing (low compression or too cold),
    brown=park it.
Blue=oil burning, could be turbo seal leaking but will blow all the time.

Any other noises out of the ordinary?
    Pump noisier than normal?
    Turbo whining louder than normal?

Try answering these questions might help other wise i can give you Rankins number.

Mine does that, always has. I put it down to the turbo begining to create boost pressure at about 15/1600rpm. which then actuates the diaphragm in the housing on top of the injection pump. The actuation of the diaphragm minutely increases fuel (in that nuetral exersize) which jumps the revs. by 2/300.
However, if it is sort of "kangarooing" at very low speeds in 1 or 2nd. it requires adjustment of what is called the "smoke screw".
There is quite a lot of info. on this site about tuning the 300tdi injection pump which I have done to mine for a definite improvement in "driveability"
Unfortunately, I dont know how to tell you where to find the info, but am sure some kind Samaritan will.
    cheers llandro

Just hit me, it could be the waste gate controler sticking.

As boost increases it is meant to open smoothly but if it's sticking it would boost very quickly and then drop off.

Connect a boost guage and look up the specs.

As far as the smoke ring (smoke screw) I wouldn't play with it with out measuring EGT (Exaust Gas Temperature).
