have you tried a spare key in it the normal key may be worn that it no longer moves the tumblers enough to allow the barrel to turn if this doesn't work you may have to pull it to bits and I am not sure how you do that on a disco, have done heaps on trucks and usually if trying a spare key does'nt work then it is the switch or locking assembly at fault.
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

I had this on my D1, and I found that the security (sheer) bolts holding the lock mechanism onto the steering column were loose.
I removed them and replaced them with new all was fine.
Being loose the part that locks into the column was sticking not alowing the lock barrel to rotate.

Unless you line it up just right in a Disco 1 it wont go in,
anyone but me who tries to insert the key in mine, can't do it - god knows why - antitheft device eh?
lube and more lube, like you said give everything a good wiggle (wake up Jeff)....

The shroud wasn't that much bran surgery on mine, just undid the screws and levered it apart carefully.
They do have plastic moulded clips that click them together so a gentle prying is needed and im pretty sure there were 5 screws in mine and I cant check at the moment as my wife is still driving it.
I could go have a look at the Jeep but that wont achieve anything other than p*&^ing me off a bit more.
the first jeep was okay, but it all went downhill after that, sadly.......
a dealer here can't get rid of a mid nineties cherokee for love nor money, quietly said in a bit of a joke: take that $%^&*! thing away for a grand....
be careful with the clip guides and posts or they'll snap......
but I'm unsure that will achieve anything as the barrel is a 'unit', unless the kids have shoved a paddlepop stick in it, or similar.......
