I think you might just loose oil pressure. Or does the whole pump fall into the sump? Either way, not good.

    Shorty.

I was told when I got mine checked that there are two types of shafts. Some are round while others have a flat which matches a similar flat part on the sprocket/pulley.

If the bolt on a round shaft comes loose the sprocket/pulley can slip. If there is a flat the sprocket will still be driven even though the bolt is loose.

Of course the bolt can still work it's way out altogether. I guess that's where things really get munched up very quickly!

My 1999 TD5 was right in the middle of the "problem ones" but was ok. It also had a flat on the shaft. I'm not sure if having a "flat" on the shaft means there is loctite on the bolt.

It's British CGM, Loctite everything. I use the lot on my old Triumph 500cc, shakeproof washers, spring washers, loctite, peen the bolt ends over. Things still fall off the old girl. As a mate of mine says, Wotcha gonna do?

When you are doing a service just drop the sump and re do it. That way you know it's definatly been done.
