    Spark Plug leads! help

    I own a 2003 4l V8 Disco purchased 12 months ago. I had an issue with one spark plug lead six months ago. I decided that I would replace the whole 8 leads. It also turned out that all my platium plugs were shot and had to replace all 8 of them as well. I thought it was strange as I only had 50,000km on the clock and I thought platium are good for 100,000km.

    Well the issue is now I have a rough idling v8. I just checked the leads tonight and found that number 3,5,7,8 leads are shorting. This is the new set i put in 6 months ago.

    Any ideas? Just replace the leads and see what happens?

    Also how in hell do you get to the dizzy on the 4l v8

    Any advice appreciated,

    did you gap your new plugs....?



    to check your leads......use a multimeter.....you are looking for 8-10,000ohms per foot......

    One thing is - there isn't a dizzy on a 4l - it's all electronic.

    The connections to the ignition module(s) / coils are just tucked behind the intake manifold.

    I honestly don't know if you can get the ht leads off with the modules/coils in place.

    You may have to remove the inlet manifold - but I am sure somebody will correct me there.

    I had a service centre put them in as I was at work at the time so I wouldnt know what gap size they used.
    I actually kept the old set of leads to keep as a spare for long trips etc etc. I was going to just swap over the new set for the old set i had but I have no idea of getting to the dizzy.
    Is there also a recommended lead set to buy? and where do you get them from?

    Yes, the coil pack is behind the inlet manifold.

    It's accessible on a "GEMS" engine but I'm told it's difficult on the later "Bosch" engine as used on the D2 and the later P38A.

    I use Magnecor leads. I bought hem from the agent, Thundercords in Granville, NSW.

    The lead layout is shown in the workshop manual under Fuel System - Repair (at least it is in the P38A manual so it's probably the same in the D2 manual).

    I agree with Ron, buy Magnecor leads (or Gasmaster) and never replace them again.

    Thanks for the info on HT leads. Do you roughly know what these leads are worth a set?

    I think I paid about $120.00 for a set of Gasmaster leads about 6 years ago. I has a set of Magnecor leads on my old Rangie for around 10 years and a set on a V8 cruiser for at least 5 years before that. None ever needed replacing.
