An idea for a replacement steering protector - give away as well

    Howdy:

One of my Disco projects was to replace the steering protector with somthing a bit better. At the time, the budget didn't allow for much (not anything new anyway) so I almost had a brainstorm when I spied a holden towbar in a bin one day.

As it so happens, the crossmember of the towbar is the same length as a steering protector. So I figured that a simple triangle of steel plate would be sufficient to hang it off the same mounting points. 2 extra spacers on the front mounts and longer front bar bolts would negate the need for different mount widths.

The trimmed bar and a cardboard template of the end plate.

Having just fitted a bullbar with winch, I was looking at this today, and it appears that it would work, with the tow hitch uppermost facing forward. It clears the chassis sufficiently, although a longer towbar tongue would need to be used to clear the front of bullbar.

And when I picked it up realised that I couldn't use it because it would be too heavy on the front end.

But that dosen't mean somebody else can't use it. (The idea or the item). If you are in the Sydney area you can have it free - come and get it before I toss it back into the scrap bin from whence it came.

If no-one else wants it, I'll grab it off you Langy.

I won't be using it as a steering protector though so you won't see your idea come to life .
