I believe they go on the top of the spring......or at least they do on D2s. You may loose the top rubber coated ring when fitting as the spacer will take its place but other than that you shouldn't need to remove any bolts.....apart from perhaps the front shock tower just to get it in and then re-attach once fitted. They are fiddly buggers and you will probably need some spring compressors to do the job. Rears fairly easy on a D2 but fronts a bit more involved due to shock being mounted inside the spring and the lack of room to move in the shock tower.
