running the pump dry for extended periods (more than about 5 minues) will kill it quick smart...

If you put fuel in the tank prior to cranking the battery flat your ok and have simply stuffed up the restart/bleed procedure, the pump should be ok...

Should the pump make any noise?

I ran mine out approx 12 months ago. Actually I stopped in on my nature strip, angled down on the passenger side. When I tried to start it again it wouldn't go. Went through the bleed procedure after putting more fuel in the tank. She started but the pump screamed for a minute or so. Now it has a slight whine. I don't remember it making a noise before. Have done at least 10,000 k's since then.

Hasn't got any worse over the past 12 months. And can't hear it from inside the Defender with the motor running. I checked it again this morning. You have to be near the rear wheel to hear it.
