Thread: Power steering whine

My parts system doesn't show a break down of the power steering pump, just a complete assembly.

My 88 Range Rover has a big bush in the pump, not bearings as such. When I rebuilt it there was not a lot of wear on it (well over 200 000kms old). New seals did the trick.

My pump is to my knowledge 175k old. Been whining about the last 10k.
It sounds like a grumbly zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Bearly noticable at idle with the bonnet up and plain as day from the driver's seat when letting the revs drop back to an idle. Not too noticable though when the revs are up but I might just not be able to hear it over the V8.

Any thoughts on the best fluid to use in one of these pumps and how to best drain out the old stuff?

Mine doesn't appear to leak at the pump.

I just use Dexron III. Drop a line off at the box and let it drain out. Maybe try Lucas P/S additive, have heard plenty of people say it is good gear.

The RAVE CD states 3.4L of ATF Dexron IID so I guess Dexron III is an appropriate choice.

Where would I get all the bushes and seals etc?
It would be good to have the parts on hand before I pulled it apart this time
Might call a local Landy spare parts place and see if they know what is required and stock the bits.

I ended up getting a double lip seal from CBC (shaft seal). The first (genuine) seal I fitted lasted about 3 months. The aftermarket one is still going over 12 months later.

Don't suppose you recall the CBC part number

Might be the same as mine?
