Transmission Problems - Disco '04 Auto Diesel

    G'day All,
I need some help with this, it's a letter from one of our deceased member's wife, Janet, who is having some problems with her vehicle, she thinks she is getting the run around, can anyone help her?

Not very converse with Rol's website thought I would email direct to you. Need some advise on a Discovery 2004 AD7 S 2.5 auto (Diesel) purchased from Lance Dixon - Victoria in September 2006 with 38,400 on the clock. The vehicle had been running beautifully - not missed a beat till I took it in for a 40K service at 45K and since then it has skipped through gears lurched into gear with a thump and takes ages to actually move into next gear if going slow. Clangs even when you put it into reverse then neutral and back in reverse again. This gear problem also can happen when it is coming back in gear when slowing down at lights etc.
It appears that when the torque converter is under pressure when you are putting ones foot down - not as noticeable when just moving slowly in heavy traffic etc it clangs into gear terribly, which can be felt through the seat. I told them about the problem the next day when they rang about the back door seal which they were now going to do under warranty - which they were supposed to fix when it went in for a warranty check in January and they procrastinated. Since the service the car had only been been driven from Albany to the Farm and to Perth and back 1200+ km's then back to Albany again. I was so concerned that I left the car in the garage till I could get back to Albany with it. When I picked it up the service clerk told me that they had put in the transmission the wrong oil or not enough and had dropped out the oil again and replaced it and he said it was still only marginally better. Have had an email from the Land Rover workshop today and the service manager is now saying he has investigated the issue regarding the poor shift, that the desk clerks comments were not correct - after reading the repair order, it had no mention of the incorrect oil type or oil level and he is prepared to fix the problem as a gesture of good will and without prejudice.

Firstly I am confused how the vehicle could deteriorate to such an extent after only having the service which did include the auto transmission being done (oil change), it always had very smooth gear transition through all levels far better than the previous 2001 discovery.

Secondly can they be trusted to fix it? Or can they do what a Toyota mob did to a work Ute that had a noisy diff instead of fixing it under warranty just put in some goop stopped the noise but eventually caused a bigger headache and had to be rebuilt 18 months later at our expense. What I am trying to say, is there something that they could put into the transmission to mask the problem for a few months for it to happen again when it wears off. What could they have done to start with that would cause such a problem?

Have had our 2001 Discovery serviced through this LD dealer and they did not pick up on the wiring loom leaking oil casing electrical problems and also the engine mounts that were causing a vibration problem, but as soon as we took it to Rover Tech in Perth that was the first things they looked at. I believe they rely on the (diagnostic) computer check too much - which appears not to always come up with answers.

I look forward to your suggestions.

    Kind regards
