    Brake fluid change

    Hi Guys
    Just changed the brake fluid.
    Painless enough,used 1.5 lts fluid.
Need doing badly,LOTS of gunk came out, fair bit of air as well. The clutch had heaps gunk in it and air as well.
All the sponge has gone from the pedal, the clutch is much more posative.
    Took 2 hours,including removing/rotating/re-fitting the wheels.
And the workshop hoist at the shire depot made it all so easy
Wait till you do the clutch nipple
    A job well worth doing!!!!!!

if you had that much gunk come out.....i would give it a month or two and change it again......just to make sure youve got all the junk out.....

    My thoughts exactly Tony
    And it was too easy!!!!
I got a "1 man bleeder" for $8.00. Made it so easy.It has a magnet to hold the bottle. Was a matter of cracking the bleeder conecting it up giving the pedal 6 strokes(with a broom handle as it was on the hoist) emtying the bottle, top up master cylinder go again on the same wheel.Did the 4 wheels, then the crutch then started again. If I did it again I would have done the 3rd lap but ran out of fluid.Just leaving it to drain was too slow, the bleeder kit is the answer.
So for 2 hours of my time,$21.00 of brake fluid and $8.00 for the bleeder, peace of mind.Just hope all the gunk stired up in the master cylinder dont cause hassels!!!!

all that gunk that came out builds up in the master cylinder......
by pressing the pedal to the floor....you are pushing the rubber seals way past what they would normally
    travel under normal braking conditions.....

so.....you can actually damage the seals by pushing them through the gunk....and end up with no pedal at all.......

changing brake fluid regularly avoids this......so too does the gravity bleed method.......

dont worry....it sounds like you got away with it this time......

after finishing the whole job.....did you go around and crack the nipples one at a time to gravity bleed for a few seconds......?
you may find a few more bubbles in the system.....

all you do is crack open the bleed nipple......and wait till the fluid starts to flow without any bubbles in it....
this will not drain the reservoir as you will hardly let any fluid out in this process.....

and a quick tip for everyone......

if you are stuck for brake fluid in the bush for any reason.....dont substitute any other type of oil or liquid....
it will swell up all the seals in the brake system requiring a complete brake overhaul.......
has anyone priced an ABS pump lately....?

if you have to.....just use clean water and drive with care......then flush the entire system with fresh brake fluid at the first chance you get.....
then flush again the next day.......and once more a week later to make sure you have got all the water out......

    Gday All
In the process of doing up a SWB lll 75 model for my boy (15 1/2), brakes are shot, wheel cylinders leaking, I havent got to the brakes as yet but when I do I have heard that it is common to have probs bleeding the system, I like the idea using the brake bleed mate, I have normally bleed other 4wds and cars using 2 people. Any heads up with the probs would be great.

    Thanks

I found that it made it soooo much easier to bleed my 2a by adjusting up all the drums up to totally lock up the brakes......then bleeding ..... then re-adjusting all the brakes back off again.
