    Question New big end nuts

According to the Land Rover work shop manual for 200Tdi Defender I should use new nuts on the big ends, why if nothing is wrong with the old ones ?????

From what I believe the thread on the nut will always stretch slightly once it is tightened to a specific torque spec. So if you re-use the nut (to the same torque spec) it doesn’t actually have the same holding power/clamping pressure it had when new.

And the above may therefore affect the big end clearances.

    Nuts/bolts are cheap.

    Thanks DarrenR,
Its more the fact that I assembled it before I read it

Not sure if it is worth pulling it apart.

Well what was the job? is the engine out, did you do a rebuild on it, or just replacing big ends in situ? Is the vehicle in question just a bush scrubber that if something breaks etc it doesn't really matter or is it your "Land Rover pride & joy"?

Personally I would put new ones on, your not doing this for a living are you? (I assume your not) so time and a waiting customer is not your enemy. This is the advantage of not being a professional (professional is someone that get's paid to do a particular job and is not an indication of their abilities), one can take one's time to do the little things that sometimes/normally aren't done.

    Best regards

Replace rod bolts and nuts or you will have a rod throw a cap and then you will have to replace the Whole engine, cheap insurance, Regards Frank.
