V8 extractors - worth it or not?

    Hi
I have the chance of some very cheap extractors.
The thing is if I remove my existing manifold, (that is fine) would I really notice any improvement?

Then there's the possibility of snapping a stud in the block, I'm just not sure if it's worth it.

    What do you think?

    Hi Andy
Thanks; so I can get an " improvement" in tone.
    Hmmmm

I'll have to have a look at them and make sure they are a straight bolt on/off first. I guess it should be unless they had a custom exhaust.

How much do used extractors go for usually?

I fitted a set of extractors to my 3.5 efi Rangie. About the only difference I noticed was a bit more exhaust noise from the engine bay (not loeaks, just general noise). I don't think I would pay to do it, but I got them off my old 2 door for free.

If they are good extractors then yes you will get a significant improvement in sound and performance. I would definately do it.

PS. Anyone seen ceramic coated extractors for the Rangie V8? I would love to put some on the new beast I am building.

You will get a nice note, reasonable performance increase 5% maybe and a little better fuel economy. I loved the roar my RR made with tractors on. Now to do the LS1 Stato.

This is the world wide general consensus, on extractor systems. Some little better than standard manifolds, some remarkable. Even if it only makes sound like a V8 should, go for it. Go up in pipe size after leaving the extractors, the extra pipe volume can act as one big expansion chamber, then you don't need restrictive mufflers to keep it legal. At full noise, a small bore V8, can sound like a wildly tuned 6 or 7 Ltr job, real deep throated.
Had a hotrod 1.2 Ltr Datsun, with 3 inch exhaust. Every body kept asking how I got a 2 Ltr to rev to 8,000 RPM.

    Shorty.
