    pre-200TDi 2.5 litre diesel

A friend is talking about buying a 2.5 litre turbo diesel in a LR 90 which pre-dates the 200TDi.

Does anyone know anything about this engine? Should he buy the vehicle?

    Cheers

Wouldnt it be the vehicle & motor after the Series 3 and Before the Defender called a 90 or 110 apparently they were a shockingly bad motor and vehicle in general. But that may be wrong because i have never seen one but just going on what i have seen in articles

    G'day Lotz-A-Landyies

The 2.5 diesel and the 2.5 turbo diesel are/were variations on the 5 bearing crankshaft motor both petrol and diesel that first appeared in the Series 3's overseas, neither of the diesels were imported into Australia,(the only diesel available in Aust was Isuzu 3.9 and 110's only on sale), so therefore spares would only be sourced from UK, they were not a successful motor, with failures at low milages, that is why the totally redesigned "Gemini" motor was produced that became known as the 200 TDI Diesel, and the improved, (quiter running) 300TDI

If your friend is in Australia and is thinking of buying a 2.5 diesel or Turbo diesel and importing, if the vehicle is in VERY good Body/Chassis Condition then I would factor in the fact that if the motor gives trouble, it would best be worth changing to 200/300TDI, as they will fit in the same engine mounts and bolt up to the G/box If the motor is poor, buy at the price according to condition, if bad, change the motor to 200tdi before importing.

    cheers

    Thanks for that info.

My friend is in New Zealand and was thinking of buying the vehicle for his son, who has caught the Land Rover bug off his dad, and also a day trip with the LROC here in Sydney.

I have mentioned the possibility of an engine swap with the 200TDi engine.

    Cheers

The old "Turbo-D" engine is just fine...

Compared to a more modern engine, yeah, it's a bit of a dog... But that's called progress.

The only thing I'd say is that they can suffer from hot spots but looked after, they'll go quite nicely.
