Discovery III - Heavy steel inertia weights

    G'day fellow Land Rover owners,
This is my first post and I would like to say that I am amazed at all the information that is available. I am no doubt going to be spending hours just searching through all the forums learning all about the wonderful world of LR's. My family and I have just bought a Discovery III and hence decided to join AULRO. So far we have put 2000km on it in 2 weeks and are loving everything about it. We have done plenty of highway cruising which is effortless and just before Easter we travelled south on the Barry Way from Jindabyne NSW to Buchan VIC. Whilst travelling on this road we ventured off the beaten track a couple of times and were amazed at the capabilities of the Terrain Response system. The Disco climbed effortlessly up a very steep and rutty track with no problems, all on Highway spec tyres.

I was having a look underneath the Disco this arvo and the question I have to ask is what are the two large (foot long by 15cm wide) heavy steel blocks underneath the cabin either side of the tow pack at the rear of each corner for?? They are on a pivot and swing forward to rearward. I assume they are something to do with the electronic setup in detecting sudden changes in enertia or the like, which could then be linked into the ABS to brake harder in the event of a sudden change in inertia.

Hope someone can help a curious first time Disco owner. I look forward to many more posts and hopefully one day I can help someone else out.

    Cheers

    Steve

From memory after looking at Stevo's D3 on the hoist at Justin's a while back, the general concensus was these weights were for the self leveling suspension system. Funny lumps of steel though and had us flumaxed for a while

P.S. Welcome to AULRO, you'll finds heaps of useful information here and a friendly bunch of folks to boot.

    Enjoy, Mick

Nothing to do with any of that... They're vibration dampers.
