    Squealing fan belt

How do you stop the serpentine fan belt from squealing on a 3.9 V8?

I read in the RAVE CD that they are due for replacement at about 140-150k so I was going to replace it. However I looked through the stuff I got from the previous owner and the water pump was replaced just before I bought it (I knew that) but the serpentine belt was replaced at the same time. So it has only done about 25k.
If I spray the belt with that anti belt squeal stuff or silicone spray the noise goes away but only for a short time (as in until next you start it).

I also wire brushed the alternator, adjuster and power steering pump pulleys as clean as I could when I had the alternator and adjuster out recently but it doesn't seem to have helped.

So how do I get rid of this %$^$%& squeal?

Is the spring loaded adjuster still OK? Have you tried a little bit of soap (applied dry with the engine running, be very, very careful)?

Spring adjuster seems ok. Don't know what a good one feels like but mine wasn't real easy to get the fan belt off. As in I had to push down real hard against the tension of the spring.

I'll give the soap a go. No pain no gain

This is what mine looks like.

There is a small amount of forward/backward movement where it mounts to the block. Only very small but I was just told that this could be enough for the squeal.

What did you pay for your replacement?

I only just went all out and replaced the $3 bearing too

This looks like a similar setup to the tdi. On mine, the rubber in the tensioner was worn and the roller ran out of line with the belt. Couldn't stop it squealing till I got a new tensioner assembly. Not saying this is definately your problem but it is fairly common. New tensioner isn't all that expensive <$100 I think.

That is what I was told. Is it possible to inspect the bush without destroying the tensioner?

I just fitted a new tensioner to the Disco. The local LR mechanics siad it needed replacement and that it would cause belt squeal. It did squeal.

With the new one fitted, the belt squeal is far worse!

However, that may be due to the fact they were out of the correct belt and I had to use the old one.
