    Light tractor

    Hi
    I am hoping someone can help me in my quest to convert a retired Land Rover into a light tractor. I will be using the engine, gearbox, transfer case, rear diff and PTO. Any help, ideas, offers of a suitable vehicle or parts appreciated. I am based in western Victoria.

    Hi Mate,and welcome.
    Any series Landy,ie the leaf sprung models will do it.The factory pto is fairly rare,they had the option of hydraulics and a rear shaft drive.
    With a hydraulic pump and the rear pto shaft and a three point linkage fitted to a ute with a set of 7.50x16 tractor tyres you would have quite a hobby farmers warhorse!!!!!

    No conversion required. The swb Series Landrover was designed from the ground up as a light tractor (80" even came as standard with a toolbar).

    More useful with the rear PTO fitted and with a governor. Also recommended is the fitting of the optional governor, although probably not needed with the diesel.

    ditto and most with the mechanical winch on the front have the chain side drive pto on the back of the tcase which has the pto to drive the rear, you just need to grab almost any tractor PTO mount and put it on the back.

    Good for pto drive, not so good for pulling or slow speed mobile pto work as the mechanical drive is related to road speed.

    But to do it hydraulically of a double belt front pully is a better bet.

    Depends on if you want to go with "as designed" or "what owrks best now"

    I don't have any practical suggestions, but you might be encouraged to follow the advice in the posts above by my brother-in-law's recollections about a Series I LWB used as a tractor.
    When he was very young just after WWII, his father had a soldier settler block north of Narrabri. They had no money for a tractor so had to use the SI to do all the ploughing etc for wheat crops. As he remembers it, the only modification was to the suspension. They had to put so much weight in the back to get enough traction that the suspension completely bottomed out and they deemed it necessary to fit wooden blocks above the axle to keep it up at somewhere near standard height.
    So it seems the LR makes a pretty useful tractor.

    See my post in marketplace alerts - I found a rear PTO yesterday.
