    Any ideas??

My 94 Disco V8i auto is holding first and not changing up as road speed is increased. This has only just started to happen in the last week.

Once it finally changes gears it works fine but is getting worse in that now it takes several k's damned near valve bouncing it before it changes up through the gears???

Not only is this not good for the gearbox but on a 250 000 km engine it's a recipe for disaster

Daft question first. Is the gearbox oil level ok?
If that is fine my next guess would be a sticking solenoid. When was the filter and oil last changed?

trying in second sounds good will have to have a try - yeah service sounds like the smart thing to do only problem is it's bloody hard to get a quality mechanic to work on a landrover in darwin.

although since the box is a ZF which both mercs and BMW use so apart from costing a fortune I might be able to get it done up here??

I had a similar problem a few years back.

History - Driving out of the High country to the Dargo pub for lunch the high temp light came on for the box (1/2 way up Collingwood Spur). Drove carefully to the pub, had lunch and checked box before starting the car. Box was cold but light still on.

    First thoughts were of LUCAS

Light stayed out for the next few days (winter in the high country most mornings were -4 so the box wasn't hot) and it went out on the way to Lakes Entrance. It was shifting correctly though.

The next morning though we did a few short trips aroung Lakes Entrance and the box stayed in 1st the whole time (approx 4 trips of under a km)

When whislt trying to find a dealer it changed gears and didn't play up again. On this we left town and headed into the NSW high country.

The auto didn't play up again.

After we got into Brisbane, i got the box serviced and found the kick down cable had melted and the plastic panel in front of the raditor that the auto box cooler hoses go past had also melted. The gear box also had burnt oil. (so it did get hot)

The explaination I got for the holding the gear was that some thing had jamed the pressure valve. That something must have cleared as didn't have any problems after that morning in Lake Entrance or service
