Thread: Turbo Issue

Don't do it!, it's unlikely to be the turbo.

It's probably the exhaust manifold gasket leaking/squealing, take off the tin shroud and have a look for missing exhaust studs first. I'll bet this is the problem. It's as common as muck. Manifold will need a re face too, as I have had them with up to a 3mm warpage.

I still haven't been able to find my squeal, which sounds similar, and it is definitely NOT the manifold.

it can also be the waste gate valve seals, if you keep cycling on and off boost while its hot as hell you can do the seals on these, look for obvious pitting/carbon on the actuator.

Agree the manifold is a likely culprit. You'll need to put a straight edge on the face to be sure.

It's always hard to diagnose anything based on something on the net, and not listening/seeing first hand, but what you describe sounds a lot like a split turbo pipe (believe it or not).

My 2000 Disco Td5 has only done 35K but towing our Phoenix van south from Townsville two months ago I had a big whooshing noise then the sort of whistle/squeal you describe, but only when boost came on. It was also distinctly from the left side of the engine bay. Everything visually and technically seemed fine but eventually (once engine was cool to lose my arms in around the turbo!!) I found that the short bent rubber hose coming straight off the compressor toward the intercooler was split.

The OEM pipe is a two ply rubber and the inside layer split along one line, the outside along a slightly different line- result was the high pressure air from the turbo making the whistling/squealing noise blowing through the layers of rubber. After waiting a week in Airlie Beach to get one in (it now comes as the entire pipe to the intercooler) I found that the new rubber pipes are a triple layer and seem far more robust. We've had no issue since- may have nothing to do with your friends Defender problem, but there's a yarn for you anyway.

I had same issue on my 300tdi where the Rubber hose from Compressor had split , and it was whistling like hell with turbo On / climbing, The Car was runing like a dog , the line to injection Pump was sending incorrect/no boost preassure signal to Pump, I initially thought it was a Manifold prob but after simple inspection of Hoses it was only that , I had the triple stuff you're talking about in garage so I cut a Peice and used he circlips to secure it , good as gold
