Funny how these threads will re-surface after so long. I didn't realise there had been so many replies. Thanks to all those who did. I really should try to keep up....

I agree... and will add that I bought my 90 with... well, no vacuum line to the booster pump. The pedal was extremely hard, a bit like what you're describing, as you push on the pedal, it gets harder and harder to push on it, and you really need advance warning to stop in time.

As that's how I bought it, and I read on here that defender brakes were pretty poor, for a while I thought that's normal.

Cutting a long story short, after the vacuum line was sorted, it was a totally different car, brakes worked perfectly... like my other car actually.
