Thread: Identify this notch!

It's a series 3 right?

is it ex army at all?? Because I did hear of some series 3 units that were futted with the engines and gearboxes that made their way into the perenties as a trial of pugrading the series 3, maybe this was one of those vehicles??

It has been modified to take a Nissan ED30 or ED33 with a 5 speed gearbox (or similar). The notch is there so that the starter motor won't rub against the chassis.

MARKs 4WDs spcified that there should be a plate welder under the notch to reinforce the chassis. The plate should have horizontal welds only, but no vertical ones, which may create a weak point in the chassis. At least that's what the engineering specs were when I did it.

(Post Script - 5min later) However Phoenix may be right about the army mod, as the MARKs 4WD specs called for a shorter notch without the angled bit at the back. The angled bit looks like 'more than necessary' engineering, it couldn't come from an under engineered company like MARKs 4WDs, so it may well be military.

Nice looking piece of work, I will continue to watch good luck on finding out who did it.
