Good question.
I guess any tyre place should know, there should be a few on this forum that can answer.
Howdy all
I am going to register my 2A in the next few months in the ACT, it has at present bar tread tyres, I have heard that I may not be able obtain a roadworthy/safety certificate with these tyres fitted.
Any one know if this is true or not???
Cheers
Ben
Good question.

All the states and terretories are different but in Vic Im pretty sure if it's club rego you can but not normal rego.
questions
1. are they HWY rated (S rated etc) If so then you should be able to
2. do they show anything that says NOT FOR ON ROAD/HWY, USE OFF ROAD USE ONLY.
I would go to the roads authority rather than a tyre joint as a tyre joints main purpose is to get you to buy tyres so if you walked into 1 that I was working at I would say no not a chance of RWC you need these tyres.
I know of a tyre place that could supply bars and similar if need be, they are in Ballarat but I dont have the number here, PM me if you want the number, cant think of their name of hand.
I know of a couple of people in the ACT with vehicles on club plates that have bar treads, and it doesn't seem to be a problem. I'm sure they have to be up to the same standard as full rego.
I can't speak for the ACT, but the general rule is that tyres (and anything else for that matter) which were originally fitted to the vehicle are acceptable for current registration. This means that bar treads would be acceptable for any 2A, provided they are to the original standard and size.
They are not the best tyres for any application, although they are quite acceptable for general offroad use, although pretty marginal for wet bitumen. I have recently changed from bar treads to Steeltreks after running bar treads on my 2a for fifteen years or so, without any worries - including annual inspections and initial Victorian and then NSW full registration.

Many years ago (1990) I did register my SI with bar treads on (600x16). No worries. Check with the local authorities, but if the tyres are road legal and as per original vehicle spec then I'd guess there shouldn't be any problem.
I don't see why not if the army used to use bar treads.

No problem registering it in queensland......if you do have one see Uncle Ho...he fix it for you.
Bar treads are rated for highway anyway.
Where did you get them from as I have been looking for sometime. I know I can get them from Vintage Tyres in Victoria, but was wondering whether they can be got locally in Brisbane.
G'day Bent
There should be no problem registering your vehicle in Qld with Bar Treadsproviding that they are standard size, 7.50x16,as mine was and I'am just north of Brisbane, that is providing they are of legal tread depth
, (most Bar Treads have a a wear bars on them, and as long as they are not worn it is legal) Have you got your RWC yet, don't believe the story that they will not register vehicles with "Conventional" tyres (cross plys)
if you have problems PM me.
cheers
Uncle Ho
Hi Bent,
My Series 2A is on Club rego in the ACT and has bartreads fitted. Irrespective of the vehicle being on club rego or full rego it still needs to be road worthy so I don't think you'll have an issue registering it with bartreads. My workshop trailer is on full ACT rego (they don't have allowance for trailers to be placed on club rego) and it's also fitted with bartreads. The inspectors had no issues with these tyres.
Regards,
Ian
