    R380 and TC oils again...

Having now checked with my local Landrover dealer, and found they are indeed happy to decant me as much oil as I want, but are actually recommending I use MTF94 ($11.94/litre) over Syntrans ($16.25/litre) saying it gives the better gearchange, what should I use? Just after opinions really....if you could get both oils, and ignoring the $10 or so difference in filling the box with either...what would you use, or is the difference likely to be so small it's irrelevant?

Must confess, after the $27/litre quote from Supacheap, I'm kind of happy regardless...

Also, they have Syntrax too - is this best for the transfer case, or can MTF94 go in that as well?

me personally i think it comes back to the temp range you use it in.

mtf appears to be great in the cooler areas.

vmx80 is better in the hotter areas

from what i have seen of it, syntrans would be good in a wider range of places...

am considering putting some in my gearbox now i have 1000k on it since the rebuild.

I can't compare Syntrans with MTF94, except to say I have had no problem with cold weather gearchanges using MTF94. Occasional residual "crunchiness" seems to be an R380 feature, when hot, with any oil.

If I were you I'd use the MTF94. It IS the recommended oil. However, it is NOT suitable for the transfer box. Use Syntax 75-90 (synthetic) or 80W-90 gear oil (non-synthetic).

    Cheers,
