Aftermarket EFI Questions - Please help

G'day all. My mate kindly drowned my rangie in a metre of mud on sat night before i had a chance to tune the computer for the EFI and actually get out and drive the thing (Can you tell im impressed). Anyway the previous owner that installed the EFI, for some unknown reason put the computer under the drivers seat so when the interior filled up with water so did the computer. Now, the computer is dead that much has been determined. The question is. Do I go for the $1200 odd dollar microtech or do I get a megasquirt and build it myself? It only has to do fuel, no ignition and it has to be simple to install (Wire up). I can solder and believe I can build the megasquirt. The Microtech needs RPM, a MAP sensor and water temp. Does anyone know what sensors/inputs a megasquirt requires? Any help would be appreciated. Im going to be rewiring pretty much the entire car anyway as I am sick of what the previous owner has left me with (Its been an ongoing problem since I bought it). Sorry for waffling on, thanks in advance

    IMHO,

Dont go trying to build a kit electronic module yourself...

all altronics and jaycar kits come with a standard warrenty disclaimer

"we can only warrenty this kit for parts condition prior to assembly work commencing. Poor handling techniques can damage some components that will not be found untill testing the kit.

Fault finding an assembled kit can be a time consuming event which can make having a serviceman conduct repairs effectively double or even triple the cost of the kit..."

That aint verbatim but its close enough to make the point.

all it takes is one dry joint to make an intermittant fault and your going to drive yourself insane trying to fix it

AFAIK Megasquirt uses MAP, RPM,water temp and I think air temp sensors.
I think Microtech should have air temp also, as all MAP sensed units compensate for air temp. The sensor should be on or in the air cleaner.

    What about Wolf?

    What about 2nd hand units?

As someone pointed out on an EFI thread on Outerlimits recently, many of the features on the newer units are wasted on a Rover V8. So older 2nd hand units are fine. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Remember that the aftermarket suppliers are pretty bad at suppling new base maps for second hand units. New units are usually shipped with sensors to suit and base maps for the particular application.
Check this aspect before buying one.

Would changing it to a carbie run engine be an option?

Thanks guys. I did think that going to a megasquirt unit would be a potential minefield for possible faults. I have had mates with wolfs and let's just say they have less than glowing reports of them. The microtechs have good reviews and seem very easy to install and tune. The wolfs are apparently very hard to tune. I had thought about 2nd hand but the risks of getting a dud or one that is obsolete or needs work is high and i have relied on this too many times and got burnt (Just look at my gearbox and diffs). I like the idea of buying something new and it all being there and warranted and everything. Carbies are an option but i sort of see it as a backwards step in a way (no offence but its just my opinion). Im not worried about wasted features as such I just want the thing to work and work reliably. I know that may be a bit of a contradiction of itself but the less complicated the better in my book, anyway you get what I mean, this is another reason why I dont like the idea of second hand, that and my mate is paying for some of the replacement costs. Im sort of leaning towards the microtech as it requires few sensors and seem to be reliable. With the sensor issue I was just wondering if the megasquirt system needed Throttle Position Sensors or anything like that.

Edit. Yes i have dried out the computer and cleaned it with contact/circuit board cleaner, it will idle although its high like 1800 rpm but as soon as there is any throttle movement the thing shuts down. The relays usually click on the board but all is silent and the LED's go out until you back off. And this is barely any throttle movement
    Thanks

Thomas, the factory ecu location was under the seat but after a few drownings most move it up under the dash, search outerlimits as there are a few guys that successfully use megasquirts on rangies.

Yeah i was just heading to outers (haven't logged on there in a few months). Mine never had injection and it has been used offroad all it's life including a few round oz trips so It just seems a funny place to put it, although it is the size of a house brick so it may have been the only place for it.
